Fitz was screaming first. One second, he had been smoking the best, and only, fag, for a dozen million years, with a gorgeous bird from space, and then next…

He didn’t want to think about the next.

The taste now. The taste had been like leather, like sucking on the fringes of a leather bookmark absent‐mindedly. Anyone might do that. There now, the taste wasn’t that bad. He could manage that, see how it might be tolerable. It had been the taste that changed first, he was sure of it.

Then the texture and the shape of the cigarette had altered as it had torn itself away from him, becoming part of the thing he didn’t want to face. No, being revealed as always having been part of the other, of the alien. The alien that was whipping his face with fine wire fingers, its arms turning into frozen branch sculptures. The Elder Thing that was howling in a voice that he could barely hear. The Elder Thing whose microwave voice might be cooking him from the inside out. Worse than that, there was another in the room as well. From its slight difference in shape he guessed it was Holsred, the nervy kid who had been going to beat him up. How long had he been there? All the time? Shielded by the illusions? What had he seen? What the hell had Compassion seen?

Fitz forced himself to react.

As Holsred’s eyes fixed on the spasming of his fellow creature, three forward and two arching over his flat starfish head, Fitz did what he did best. Get away on his toes.
